Homesick for Iguazu Falls & Los Troncos
By Leontien Aarnoudse
Close to the frontier with Brazil, a few kilometers from the mighty, impressive waterfalls of Iguazu, an Argentinean couple understood the definition of hospitality and put this into practice at their small hotel ‘Los Troncos‘ in Puerto Iguazu. It is a perfect example of how in a place known for its tourist attraction, it is still possible to keep its own identity and friendliness.
Las Cataratas
Igauzu is famous for one of the world’s most beautiful wonders of nature – the Igauzu falls. These “cataratas” (falls), located on the border of Argentina and Brazil consist of 275 falls along 2.7 kilometres of the Iguazu River. You can enter the waterfalls from Argentinian as well as Brazilian side. It’s worth visiting them both, as the Argentinan side gets very close to the steep ‘Devil’s Throat’, and the Brazilian side gives an unforgettable panoramic view over the falls, so you get an idea how wide the falls really are.
Although this place attracts millions of tourists every year, it’s still possible to enjoy the beauty of nature in the
National Park Igauzu: the overwhelming sound of falling water, the hypnotising rainbow reflections in the water and lots of butterflies of all colours flying around you. Paying attention to the flora and fauna in the park are really worth your while. If you’d like to get more out of your visit to the park, here is some advice when you explore the Argentinean side: Choose to walk through the park instead of taking the tourist train (that’s where I met Mr. Toucan), take the ecological boat trip in the morning or late afternoon (Hello, Mr. Cayman!) and don’t hurry too much, take time to observe the beauty (and you might be lucky to have butterflies landing on your skin).
Puerto Igauzu
Puerto Igauzu is a small town that attracts lots of tourists to Argentina every year. It isn’t unlikely that a lot of habitants make a living out of tourism. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that, of course – it helps their local economy and creates jobs. The only problem is that often the tourist attractions create nightmare kind of places with 24-hour funfair activities, soaring prices and annoying people trying to sell something you don’t want. A friendly place like Puerto Igauzu shows that it doesn’t always have to be like that.
Thanks to the wooden cabanas, tables and chairs made of stumps and trees, a nice forest view and very friendly staff around, you really have the feeling that you are in paradise. The breakfast with homemade cakes and pies and fresh fruit, the small swimming pool and the welcome drink only confirms this feeling. The staff of Los Troncos are doing as much as possible to make your stay comfortable, without bothering you too much all the time. They also help you with your trip to the Cataratas or elsewhere. The mid-range hotel is located at the edge of Puerto Igauzu, but a stroll to the centre won’t take you more than 5 minutes. There is just one thing to keep in mind: you might become homesick when you leave.
